Fifth Business: More Than Meets The Eye Jeffery Soy Carl Jung’s literary archetypes determine the structure of literary works. In the novel Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies, many of Jung’s archetypes are reflected in the characters. These archetypes include the Eternal Boy, the Wise Old Man, the Hero, the Maiden, and the Persona. The characters of Boy Staunton, Dunny Ramsay, Paul Dempster, Mary Dempster, and Leola Cruikshank symbolize these archetypes and support the overall theme of appearance versus reality in Fifth Business. Upon analyzing Carl Jung’s archetypes, one would find that Boy is the most obvious example of the Eternal Boy archetype. Over the course of the novel, Boy grows physically, but he acts very childish. He†¦show more content†¦The reasons being that Paul is a magician, whose job involves the juggling of both illusion and reality. Dunny appears to be the Hero of the novel, but in reality, due to his life and actions, Paul is the real Hero of Fifth business. While Paul may be the novel’s Hero, he would obviously not exist if he was not born. His mother, Mary Dempster is the Maiden. The Maiden archetype represents purity and childlike innocence (Cherry). When Paul was still an infant, Mary breast-fed him. Her neighbors, along with Dunny’s mother remarked that â€Å"she lacked the solemnity they expected of a nursing mother† (Davies, 21). Mary had exposed herself even in the presence of Amasa, her husband. In Deptford’s eyes, her actions were shameless and frowned upon but to Mary, the act of breastfeeding Paul was simply maternal. She was viewed as unfit to be a reverend’s wife. Mary’s role as the Maiden supports the theme of appearance versus reality. One could say that societal norms are the appearance while Mary’s maternal instincts are the reality. The next individual whom can be analyzed is Leola Cruikshank, who fits the archetype of the Persona, the public image.After marrying Boy, Leola is forced to learn and adapt to a sophisticated lifestyle. She puts on a mask of a prim and proper woman, which she is not.
